What is Ayurveda?

“Why leave for tomorrow, what we can heal today?”

Yashoda Naidoo

The word Ayurveda comes from the Sanskrit words ayur, meaning “life,” and veda, meaning “science or knowledge.”

Considered by many to be the oldest form of healing science, Ayurveda is based on the idea that we must keep our bodies in balance. We do this by identifying our dosha as either vata, pitta, or kapha, and aligning our habits, behaviors, and the foods we eat around them.

Maintaining this balance begins with the choices we make each day. The forces of the elements are present both within our bodies and outside of us, and by bringing awareness to this and how we care for ourselves, we can create harmony.

As Hippocrates said, “Food is thy medicine.”

If we begin by eating a natural plant-based diet, we can have health and longevity. Ayurveda is the living embodiment of this ideal, and it includes all cultures and tastes.
